IUCN Red List Assessment Workshop

Global Parasite Conservation Action Plan Published

At the 2025 July meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists, Specialist Group Co-Chair Skylar Hopkins taught a workshop on assessing parasites using the IUCN Red List criteria, touching upon the challenges of applying the Red List criteria to these unique species and reviewing several real draft assessments for future publication. If you know of any parasite taxa you would like to assess or aid in assessing, we invite you to let us know at the “Get Involved” tab above.

In August 2020, an international working group published a formal action plan to conserve parasite biodiversity. Set to be accomplished within the next decade, 12 outlined goals each fall into one of these four categories: data collection & synthesis, risk assessment & prioritization, conservation practice, and outreach & education. By following this step by step plan, tangible change could be seen in protocols for parasite conservation management, conservation assessments for individual species, and organizations’ capacities to research and conserve parasites. The global plan was published in Biological Conservation and can be read in full here.
